Camp Wildwood

Q: How does a day work at Wildwood? Will I get lost walking around? How does any new guy know where to go?

A: Let’s answer the last two first. Wildwood has general counselors that live with you guys and take you around camp. You can never get lost or not know where to go, they are always there. As far as how a day works, you get to pick your schedule everyday, within a set of activities that we select for you to choose from. No two days are ever the same. For more info, check the About Camp Section for a sample schedule.

Q: Who watches me at night, are we ever alone?

A: You are never alone as there is a counselor in your bunk every night!!

Q: Does Wildwood have a Color War?

A: Absolutely, it’s four days toward the end with different themes and wild “breaks” every summer. If you go with your brother or a relative, you will always be on the same team.

Camp Wildwood

Q: Does Wildwood have any bullies?

A: No camp ever wants bullies. That’s why Mark and Peter meet and interview every new child that applies. Because of their experience running a camp, well over 25 years, Mark and Peter can tell which kids will make great new campers.

Q: Is Wildwood’s lake freeeeezing? Is it gushy on the bottom?

A: Our lake is actually a huge pond called Woods Pond. It is very warm because it is only 25 feet deep in the middle, and warms up quickly to about 80°. We rake out the leaves so there is no gushiness on the bottom!

Q: What happens if I get homesick?

A: If this happens, remember, it’s only a temporary setback. You will be brought to one of the directors or their wives for a “pick me up” chat and soon after, will be fine. We also say “goodnight” to you every night so you can also talk to us before bedtime.

Q: Bugs, I hate them, are there many at Wildwood?

A: Yes, we have bugs, but not many. We are in the woods, and they live there as well. We put down cedar mulch which they don’t like, so they stay away. And there are no areas in camp with standing water, so the mosquitoes don’t like us either.

Q: How is the food at Wildwood?

A: We think it’s awesome and so do the campers. Plenty of choices, salad and fruit bars, and if you’re very picky, Mark and Peter will go into the kitchen to get you something that you will eat. Each night you get a juice and a cookie/snack, followed quickly by brushing your teeth!

Q: Can I play against other camps in games and tournaments?

A: Of course, probably once or twice a week and nobody gets cut. We play other camps in baseball, soccer, lacrosse, hockey, basketball, tennis, archery and swimming.

Q: How do I stay in touch with my parents? Can my parents talk to me?

A: Parents can e-mail you every day, and they will see pictures of you online at our Daily Diary page on the website. Parents can make three calls to Wildwood campers (not including Birthdays, that’s a bonus). Oh, and yes you have to write Mom and Dad at least twice a week.

If you liked the answers to these frequently asked questions, and are feeling a little more comfortable about sleep-a-way camp, the next step would be for you to come by for a summer tour. If that’s not possible, we will come to your home one evening to meet with you. We want you to feel excited about attending sleep-a-way; this is a BIG step in your growing up. And if you end up at Camp Wildwood, welcome to our family.

If you have any more questions, please e-mail them to us at campwildwood@campwildwood.com or call us at 212-316-1419.
